(SRN NEWS)-( ) Southern Baptists will gather for their annual meeting in Orlando this week. Many issues will be addressed and for the fourth year in a row, delegates will debate whether to formally ban churches with female pastors. Another proposed resolution calls for humane treatment of illegal immigrants while also affirming the government’s responsibility for immigration enforcement. Another denounces anti-Semitic violence and conspiracy theories. More than 11,000 church representatives have pre-registered for the two-day meeting. The SBC’s membership has declined to its lowest level since 1973, but it remains the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S.
( ) A federal court in Nigeria has sentenced four radical Muslim gunmen to death in the killing of at least 50 people during a 2022 attack on a church in the southwestern part of the country. Children were among those killed in the assault just as services were ending at the church in Ondo state on June 5th, 2022. Scores of people also were wounded, overwhelming hospital workers. The four men were convicted of terrorism charges. A fifth defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence. Prosecutors say the defendants are members of the al-Shabab Islamic terror group and operated from a cell in north-central Nigeria.
( ) A truck-driving preacher who helped thwart an alleged kidnapping attempt in South Carolina — all caught on his dashboard camera — says he’s not a hero, but a tool of God. Anthony Moore was driving a route in Aiken County last month when a woman ran directly into his path with her hands tied behind her back. A man in a car that had been on the side of the road swerved in front of the truck before taking off. That man was later arrested. Moore says “I just see it as a divine assignment from God, because had I not been there, they probably wouldn’t have caught the man. It was a special assignment from God.”
