American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil won’t throw for at least six weeks due to a “high-degree lat strain,” New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday afternoon.

Gil was unable to get loose in a bullpen session on Friday and the Yankees sent him for an MRI exam on Saturday. Boone said Gil knew something felt amiss because of tightness in the shoulder that rendered him unable to “let it go.”

“It’s at least a six weeks no-throw, we know that for sure, but he’s still got to be examined by doc and get the other opinions on everything there,” Boone said Monday. “He’s been down this road before. … But I think he’s at least right now in the right frame of mind.”

Gil, 26, worked 151 2/3 innings in 29 starts last season when he went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA. He limited batters to a .189 batting average and struck out 171 but walked 77, most in the majors.

Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2022.
