Saturday’s game between the visiting Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees was postponed due to a forecast of sustained rain at Yankee Stadium.
The postponement was announced a little over a half hour after the originally scheduled 7:35 p.m. EST start. The game will be made up as a split doubleheader on Aug. 29.
The tarp was placed on the field nearly an hour before the first pitch. Rain did not appear for another hour, and the game was rained out shortly after 8 pm.
Right-hander Will Warren (7-1, 3.22 ERA) was slated to pitch for the Yankees and oppose left-hander Ranger Suarez.
On Sunday, Suarez (2-3, 3.38) is expected to take the mound for the Red Sox, while right-hander Cam Schlittler (7-3, 1.89) will pitch for the Yankees.
Boston is 8-5 in its past 13 visits to the Yankees after opening the series with Friday’s 5-3 victory.
Willson Contreras homered for the second straight day by hitting a two-run drive off Ryan Weathers. Contreras also drove in three runs and has reached base in his past 17 games.
The Yankees are 7-4 in their past 11 games but have lost three of four since losing slugger Aaron Judge to a stress fracture in his right rib. Before Saturday’s postponement, catcher Austin Wells was put on the injured list because of cervical headaches. Catcher J.C. Escarra was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.
