Yankees right-hander Luis Gil will begin the season at Triple-A, and outfielder Randal Grichuk was added to the New York roster ahead of Opening Day in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Gil, 27, had an erratic spring but threw well on March 20 with seven strikeouts in five innings against the Baltimore Orioles to close on a positive. The Yankees won’t require a fifth starter until April 11 based on the early season schedule.

The Yankees sent Gil to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre instead of using him out of the bullpen to begin the season, manager Aaron Boone said. They are expected to recall him next month.

Gil is one of three starters — Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are on the injured list recovering from surgeries — the Yankees could have in the rotation before the end of the 2026 season.

The Yankees will open the season with a four-man rotation of Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.

Gil, in four seasons with the Yankees, has appeared in 47 games (all starts) and is 20-9 with a 3.50 ERA. He has 255 career strikeouts in 242 innings but also 131 walks.

Also Wednesday, shortstop Anthony Volpe was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 22) as he continues to recover from surgery on his left shoulder.
