Venus Williams became the oldest woman to win a WTA tour-level singles match in 21 years on Tuesday, when she defeated 35th-ranked Peyton Stearns, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Tuesday evening.

Williams, 45, had not competed since the March 2024 Miami Open. She teamed with Washington, D.C. native Hayley Baptiste to win in doubles on Monday night and converted 6-of-14 break point chances against the 23-year old Stearns. Moreover, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion served nine aces in the 1-hour, 37-minute match.

US Open winner Emma Radacanu of Great Britain edged No. 7 Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Other first-round winners included Americans No. 6 Sofia Kenin, Taylor Townsend, and Caroline Dolehide.
