Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 7 Baylor escapes Davidson in OT

Yuting Deng drove from the top of the key and banked in a 3-footer over two defenders with three seconds left in overtime to lift No. 7 Baylor to a 74-72 WBCA Showcase victory over Davidson on Saturday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Bears (5-1) never trailed in overtime but they needed Deng’s heroics after Davidson’s Charlise Dunn sank three free throws with 12 seconds left to forge the game’s fifth tie. Dunn paced the Wildcats (4-3) with 33 points and 11 rebounds, highlighted by her 3-pointer with four seconds left to force overtime. Katie Donovan added 15 points.

Taliah Scott led Baylor with 22 points before becoming one of three Bears to foul out. Deng and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs scored 12 points apiece while Kiersten Johnson contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks.

No. 19 Iowa 64, Miami 61

After seeing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead dwindle to two in the closing seconds, the Hawkeyes got three late free throws from Kylie Feuerbach to hold off the Hurricanes at the WBCA Showcase in Lake Buena Vista.

Looking like it was headed to victory when Hannah Stuelke’s layup made it 61-49 with 8:30 to play, Iowa (6-0) went ice cold, going scoreless the next 8:19 while Miami (4-1) scored 10 straight. But Feuerbach stole the ball and was fouled with 11 seconds to play and hit both free throws. After Gal Raviv made it 63-61 with a layup, Feuerbach made 1 of 2 free throws with two seconds left.

Amarachi Kimpson’s 3-point try missed to seal the win for the Hawkeyes. Ava Heiden scored a game-high 20 for Iowa while Stuelke went for 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Amarachi Kimpson scored 19 for the Hurricanes and Ra Shaya Kyle added 17 in the loss. Vittoria Blasigh added 11 off then bench but the rest of the team combined for 14 points.

No. 20 Kentucky 72, No. 21 Louisville 62

Tonie Morgan scored 19 points and added seven assists to lead the Wildcats to the nonconference win over the host Cardinals.

Leading 37-35 at the break, the Wildcats (7-0) broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 20-6 to take a 57-41 lead into the final quarter. Louisville (4-2) trimmed its deficit to eight on three occasions, but Kentucky — which shot 52.5% from the floor — had an answer each time.

Clara Strack (10 rebounds, two blocks) and Teonni Key (eight rebounds, four blocks) each scored 17 for the Wildcats, who convincingly won the battle of the boards 41-27 and points in the paint (40-24). Jordan Obi added 10 points and five rebounds.

Tajianna Roberts scored 22 points and Laura Ziegler added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Cardinals, who shot just 39.7% from the floor and had their four-game winning streak snapped.
