USMNT, Atlanta United GK Brad Guzan announces retirement

Longtime U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Brad Guzan announced his retirement on Tuesday, ending a decorated 21-year career.

Guzan, who turned 41 last month, will finish the regular season Saturday when his Atlanta United host D.C. United. Atlanta did not qualify for the postseason.

“21 years is a long time,” Guzan posted on X. “I’m just a kid from Chicago who instantly knew this game was for me. Today, as I prepare to hang up my gloves, I know this journey was never just about me. THANK YOU – TO EVERYONE.”

Guzan has featured in 546 professional matches since making his debut with former MLS club Chivas USA in 2005. He made 201 appearances in England from 2008-17 with Aston Villa, Hull City and Middlesbrough, including 171 as a Premier League mainstay with Aston Villa. He joined Atlanta in 2017.

Named the 2007 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and an MLS All-Star in 2018 and 2019, Guzan won the MLS Cup with Atlanta in 2018 and the U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup in 2019.

He has two clean sheets in 25 starts this season, bringing his totals with the Five Stripes to 61 shutouts in 223 starts, both franchise records.

Guzan played in 64 matches for the USMNT, winning three Gold Cups and making the roster for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
