WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell fell twice near the Senate chamber on Wednesday, Punchbowl News reporters said.

In one fall, the Kentucky Republican fell down the stairs and walked away with help from other senators in addition to another fall inside the chambers, the news outlet said.

McConnell used a wheelchair as a precaution to get around the Capitol after the fall.

“Senator McConnell is fine. The lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his regular schedule of work,” McConnell’s spokesperson said in a statement.

McConnell, 82, who has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985, stepped down as party leader last month. The longtime senator plans to serve out the remaining two years of his term in office, despite a series of health scares including previous falls and two instances of freezing up in public while speaking.
