WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Thursday called on Congress to provide billions of dollars to replace the Federal Aviation Administration’s crumbling telecommunications equipment and radar systems, build new towers and improve runway safety.

Duffy’s plan calls for replacing copper wire with new fiber, wireless and satellite technologies, replacing 618 radars, increasing the number of airports with surface awareness technology and building six new air traffic control centers.
