US National Security Advisor and Saudi Crown Prince Hold High-Level Talks on New Defense Framework

By The Media Line Staff

President Joe Biden’s national security chief led a high-level American delegation to Saudi Arabia on Sunday to discuss a “semi-final” draft of a new defense agreement with Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s Crown Prince and de facto leader.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with the Saudi Prince, commonly known as MBS, in the eastern city of Dhahran. Dhahran is home to Saudi Aramco, the kingdom’s colossal state-run oil firm and the most profitable company worldwide.

“The semi-final version of the draft strategic agreements between the kingdom and the United States of America, which are almost finalized — and what is being worked on between the two sides in the Palestinian issue to find a credible path — were discussed,” Saudi state media said in a photo-less press release after the meeting.

Following Sullivan’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House also released a statement on Monday addressing the Saudi trip, calling the talks “constructive.”

While details are still being negotiated, the highly anticipated landmark framework is being signaled as a paradigm shift within the region at large. The White House referred to the deal as “a comprehensive vision for an integrated Middle East region.”

In addition to addressing the US-Saudi relationship and the long-standing regional partners’ shared security concerns about an emboldened Iran, the arrangement will also address the Israel-Hamas war, Arab normalization with Israel, and a future Palestine.
