US Embassy in Albania Warns Iran May Target US-Linked Entities and Opposition Figures

By The Media Line Staff

Albania warns that US-linked entities, Americans, and members of the Iranian opposition could be targeted by Iran as the Middle Eastern war continues, according to the US embassy and local authorities.

Tirana security institutions are on high alert, with all mechanisms “active and functional.” The US embassy cautioned that public areas, including tourist sites, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and clubs, could be at risk and urged vigilance and the reporting of suspicious activity.

Albanian President Bajram Begaj is receiving ongoing updates on potential threats, according to a statement issued Thursday by his office.

“The president is informed about every situation and scenario, as well as all measures taken under security protocols,” the presidency said, adding that coordination with international partners remains at “extremely high levels.” Officials reported that Begaj is in daily contact with the National Security Council.

The warning comes as signs of broader regional strain emerge in Bulgaria after authorities in Sofia confirmed that Iran sent a diplomatic note last month cautioning the Balkan country against permitting US military aircraft to use its airports for operations targeting Iran. The communication followed reports of US military planes being seen in the capital.

Former Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynski said the message was part of standard diplomatic exchanges but carried weight given the current situation. “This is normal diplomatic practice in times of crisis. It is not a threat, but a warning,” she said in an interview with NOVA television.

Neynski said Bulgaria had reassured Tehran that it is not involved in military activity, stating there are no combat flights over its airspace and no refueling taking place on its territory. She added that the diplomatic note was not disclosed earlier to avoid raising public concern during an ongoing election campaign, when national security issues are particularly sensitive.
