US and Iran Hail Constructive Nuclear Talks in Oman, Set To Resume Next Week

The United States and Iran held what both sides described as “positive” and “constructive” talks in Oman on Saturday, aiming to restart negotiations over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. The discussions come amid renewed tensions, as US President Donald Trump has issued a warning that Iran will face military action if a deal is not reached. 

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, speaking on state television, expressed cautious optimism about the talks. “I think we are very close to a basis for negotiations, and if we can conclude this basis next week, we’ll have gone a long way and will be able to start real discussions based on that,” he said. Despite the promising tone of the meeting, Araqchi noted that both sides have significant differences to overcome. 

On the US side, officials praised the talks as a step forward. A White House statement described the discussions involving President Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steven Witkoff, and US Ambassador to Oman, Ana Escrogima, as “very positive and constructive.” The statement added that these high-level talks mark an important first step in resolving a decades-long dispute over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. 

The meeting, which is the first between Iran and a Trump administration since his 2017–2021 term, is part of the renewed focus on nuclear issues following Trump’s decision to reimpose severe sanctions on Iran. His administration has maintained that any failure to reach a nuclear deal would result in military consequences for Tehran.
