“Why does such a small country need such a large computer?” 

Albert Einstein’s question at a Princeton meeting in the early 1950s drew laughter, but the decision behind it was no joke. The Weizmann Institute was being asked to spend roughly 20% of its budget to build a computer as part of an effort to recruit a Princeton mathematician, Chaim Pekeris, to Israel.
