Sudan Receives 1.4 Million Cholera Vaccines Amid Widespread Outbreak

Sudan’s Health Ministry announced on Saturday that it has received 1.4 million doses of cholera vaccine from international organizations to combat an ongoing outbreak that has infected more than 20,000 people. Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim stated that the vaccines, supplied by the Global Vaccine Alliance, World Health Organization, and UNICEF, will be distributed to three of the hardest-hit states: River Nile, Kassala, and Gedaref. The aim is to immunize over 1 million people aged 1 year and older.
Since the cholera outbreak was declared on August 17, nearly 600 people have died, and over 20,000 cases have been reported. The surge in infections has been attributed to poor environmental conditions and the use of contaminated water, exacerbated by the country’s ongoing conflict.
The cholera crisis is part of a larger health emergency in Sudan, where other diseases like malaria, measles, and dengue fever are also spreading. Fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has displaced millions and killed around 20,000 people since April 2023.
