Sa’ar Rules Out Forced Gaza Expulsions as Katz, Ben-Gvir Back Migration Plans

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said Israel has no plans to forcibly remove Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and would allow residents to leave only voluntarily if another country agreed to receive them.  

“We are not planning to expel or to deport anyone from (the) Gaza Strip,” Sa’ar told a press conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, during a visit to the country.  

Sa’ar said Palestinians who independently decide to leave Gaza would not be prevented from doing so, while rejecting any policy requiring residents to depart.  

“If someone wants to immigrate (on) his own will, and there is a country which is ready to accept him …. we will not oppose that, but we will (also) not enforce anyone against (their) will,” he said.  

The foreign minister also said Israel does not intend to permanently govern Gaza’s population or establish new Israeli settlements in the territory.  

His remarks differ from recent statements by other members of the Israeli government who have advocated migration from Gaza as part of plans for the territory’s future.  

Defense Minister Israel Katz said last week that there was “no real solution for Gaza in the end without this migration” of Palestinians.  

Also last week, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir presented  a seven-year plan to remove Gaza’s population through what he described as “voluntary emigration.”  

Foreign governments, including Spain and Ireland, have rejected suggestions that they accept people displaced from Gaza. They have maintained that the territory’s future should remain connected to a Palestinian state.
