President Trump Floats Proposal to End War, Place Muslim Countries in Charge of Gaza Strip

A reported US initiative to end the Gaza war has taken shape around President Donald Trump’s meetings with Muslim leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
According to the Lebanese media, a Western diplomatic source said Wednesday that Trump’s proposal envisions a 20-day ceasefire followed by the release of hostages. It remains unclear how many of the 48 captives would be freed at that stage. The plan further calls for an Arab-led administration to temporarily govern Gaza, with participating Islamic states overseeing the enclave while a new Palestinian government is formed without Hamas influence.
The Emirati state news agency WAM confirmed that Arab leaders pressed for both the release of hostages and humanitarian relief measures during their session with Trump. Leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan were present. Sources reported that the leaders were generally supportive of the American president’s initiative but awaited reactions from Israel and Hamas before committing.
President Trump, according to Politico, also assured Arab counterparts that he would block any Israeli attempt to annex territory in the West Bank, which remains under Palestinian Authority control.
The talks coincided with Trump’s address to the UN General Assembly, where he linked progress in Gaza to his broader regional diplomacy. Later on Wednesday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff told reporters that Washington was “hopeful … even confident that in the coming days we’ll be able to announce some sort of breakthrough.” He said Trump’s 21-point peace plan had already been shared with several leaders during the UN meetings.
While details of the initiative have not been formally published, the outline suggests Washington is seeking a combination of temporary Arab oversight in Gaza, staged hostage releases, and a pathway toward governance without Hamas.
