Pessimism Grows Over Hostage-Cease-fire Deal as Israeli Negotiators Lose Hope

Prospects for a phased hostage-cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas based on Israel’s May proposal are “close to zero,” according to unnamed sources cited by Channel 12. Initially expected to present a new bridging proposal, the US is now unlikely to do so.

Israeli negotiators express “very broad pessimism,” attributing the deadlock to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent insistence on maintaining IDF control of the Philadelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border. This stance, along with hardline comments from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, has reportedly undermined efforts to reach an agreement.

A senior Israeli negotiator informed hostage families that even the initial phase of the deal, involving a six-week cease-fire and the release of 30 hostages, is unlikely to occur. Meanwhile, US officials expressed frustration and sadness over the lack of progress, highlighting increasing demands from Hamas, including the release of additional Palestinian prisoners. The deadlock is causing concerns about escalating hostilities, particularly in Israel’s northern region, amid fears of renewed conflict with Hezbollah.

Daily protests continue outside IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, where hostage families and supporters demand a resolution. The situation remains tense, with 97 hostages still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza, alongside the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead.
