Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured coalition allies that sending negotiators to Qatar does not signal an end to the Gaza war, as Israel prepares for another round of indirect talks with Hamas. The decision to dispatch a delegation came after a direct request from the Trump administration, following the release of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, whom Hamas had held for 584 days.
Despite US pressure, Netanyahu reportedly told party leaders that any deal must involve dismantling Hamas’s military and governing power. The Israeli delegation traveling to Doha includes Netanyahu’s diplomatic adviser Ophir Falk, hostage envoy Gal Hirsch, and a former Shin Bet deputy. Talks are being mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US.
Trump, set to visit several Gulf states this week, praised Hamas’ move as “a step taken in good faith” and expressed hope for progress on releasing the remaining hostages. But Netanyahu said negotiators will only discuss a temporary truce, not a full ceasefire, unless Hamas disarms.
Meanwhile, Israel’s leadership is preparing for renewed military escalation in Gaza, possibly re-occupying the territory. In a closed-door Knesset session, Netanyahu said many Gazans may ultimately seek to leave the Strip, but finding countries to accept them remains a challenge.
Israel also plans to restart humanitarian aid deliveries under a new system. The program would confine aid recipients to a designated southern zone, drawing criticism from international groups that refuse to participate.
