Kuwait Threatens Retaliation After Drone Kills One, Injures Others, Damages Airport

By The Media Line Staff

Kuwait said it reserves “the full right” to respond after a drone and missile attack on Kuwait International Airport killed one person, injured several others and caused extensive damage to airport facilities, according to statements from Kuwaiti authorities on Wednesday.

The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as Iranian attacks on the country, saying Kuwait “categorically rejects” the strikes and accusing Tehran of fueling regional instability.

According to the ministry, the attacks represent a “flagrant violation” of international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026.

The ministry said Kuwait’s security, sovereignty and the safety of its citizens and residents remain a “red line that cannot be crossed,” adding that the repeated attacks reflect a “systematic aggressive approach” that the country “will neither accept nor tolerate.”

Kuwait’s Defense Ministry said several drones struck Terminal 1 at Kuwait International Airport as part of what it called Iranian aggression. The ministry said the attack caused major material damage to the terminal, wounded several people and resulted in one fatality.

Following the attack, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation activated emergency procedures and suspended all operations at the airport. In a statement carried by the state Kuwait News Agency, authorities said all arriving and departing flights were halted while emergency measures were implemented.

Flights were rerouted to alternative airports as officials assessed the damage and inspected conditions at the facility. Authorities said operations would remain suspended until all necessary procedures are completed and the airport is deemed safe to reopen.

Officials said Terminal 1, one of the airport’s principal passenger terminals, sustained significant damage.

The strike followed reports of air raid sirens overnight in both Bahrain and Kuwait, roughly one hour after the United States announced it had struck an empty oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz while the vessel was traveling to a port in Iran.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks across the Gulf, saying US military bases were the intended targets. CNN described the exchange as the largest wave of attacks in weeks as negotiations continue over ending the conflict.

Earlier, the US military said two Iranian missiles launched toward Kuwait either fell short or disintegrated before reaching their destination. It also said three missiles fired toward Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini forces.

According to the Revolutionary Guards, the attacks were retaliation for an American strike on Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. The United States has said that operation followed an Iranian attack.

Reuters previously reported explosions on Qeshm Island, although no additional reports confirmed whether any facilities there had been struck.
