Israeli FM Condemns Stabbing of Jewish Jeweller in Tunisia’s Djerba

By The Media Line Staff

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Thursday strongly condemned a stabbing attack on a Jewish jeweller in the Tunisian island of Djerba, urging Tunisian authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard the local Jewish community.

“I strongly condemn the attack that targeted a member of the Jewish community in Djerba, Tunisia, today,” Sa’ar wrote on his official X account. “I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

The incident occurred Wednesday in the Ajim area of Djerba, home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Arab world. Tunisian media reported that the assailant attacked the victim with a sharp object, severely injuring his hand. The reason for the attack remains under investigation.

Sa’ar noted that the assault came just two years after a deadly shooting during Lag B’Omer celebrations at the island’s historic El Ghriba synagogue, which killed five people, including two Jewish worshippers and three security personnel.

Unverified video footage of the attack has circulated online, prompting renewed concerns about anti-Jewish violence on the island. Though no official statement has yet been released by Tunisian authorities, local sources told media outlets that the suspect is a resident of Ajim with no prior criminal record.

The two individuals involved in the dispute were reportedly taken into custody by the National Security District headquarters in Djerba. The victim is reported to be in stable condition and recovering from his injuries.
