Israel Strikes Hamas Leader Mohammed Sinwar in Command Center Under Gaza Hospital

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) launched a targeted airstrike Tuesday on an underground Hamas command center beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza, in an attempt to kill senior Hamas military commander Mohammed Sinwar. Sinwar, the brother of slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, has been considered the group’s de facto leader in Gaza since Yahya’s death last year.
According to Israeli defense sources, the strike involved multiple fighter jets and bunker-busting munitions designed to destroy the subterranean facility and eliminate anyone inside. The IDF later confirmed a follow-up strike on the same location to prevent the evacuation of wounded operatives. The hospital compound has long been identified by Israeli intelligence as a hub for Hamas operations.
“We will not allow the Hamas terrorist organization to use hospitals and humanitarian facilities in Gaza as shelters and terrorist headquarters,” said Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. “We will pursue them and their leaders and strike them everywhere.”
The operation was carried out based on intelligence gathered by the IDF and Shin Bet. Katz said he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized the strike following reports that Hamas fighters were using the hospital compound to plan attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians.
Arab media and the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry claimed at least 16 people were killed and over 70 injured. Those numbers have not been independently verified and do not differentiate between civilians and fighters.
While Hamas has not confirmed Sinwar’s death, Israeli officials increasingly believe he was killed in the strike, though they caution that final confirmation may take days or weeks. The ambiguity mirrors past Israeli operations against high-level targets such as Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.
The assassination attempt coincided with renewed negotiations in Qatar over a potential hostage deal. Israeli, US, and Qatari officials were in Doha Tuesday, including US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.
