Israel Plans Retaliation for Hezbollah Attack, Aims to Avoid All-Out War
Israel aims to retaliate against Hezbollah for a deadly rocket attack that killed 12 children and teenagers in the Golan Heights while avoiding an all-out war in the Middle East, according to Israeli officials to Reuters on Monday. Lebanon braces for Israel’s response following the attack, which both Israel and the United States have attributed to Hezbollah, though the group has denied any involvement.
Two Israeli officials indicated that Israel is preparing for a potential few days of fighting in response to the strike on a sports field in a Druze village. All four officials, including a senior defense official and a diplomatic source, spoke on condition of anonymity, providing no specific details about the planned retaliation. “The estimation is that the response will not lead to an all-out war,” one diplomatic source told Reuters. “That would not be in our interest at this point.”
On Sunday, Israel’s security cabinet authorized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to decide on the manner and timing of the response. According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the response is expected to be “limited but significant,” with options ranging from attacks on infrastructure to targeting Hezbollah weapons depots or commanders.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been the most severe since their war in 2006, exacerbated by the ongoing Gaza war. Hezbollah, allied with the Palestinian group Hamas, has stated its attacks on Israel are in support of the Palestinians and will continue until Israel’s offensive in Gaza ceases.
