Israel in Talks with South Sudan on Possible Gaza Relocation Plan
By The Media Line Staff
Israel is reportedly in discussions with South Sudan over a proposal to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in the war-torn East African nation, multiple sources told the Associated Press. An Israeli delegation is expected to visit soon to explore establishing temporary camps, which Israel would likely fund.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken of “voluntary migration” as a way to relieve Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, echoing a concept promoted by US President Donald Trump. Similar approaches with other African countries have met strong resistance from Palestinians, human rights groups, and much of the international community, who warn that such relocation would amount to forced population transfer in violation of international law.
For South Sudan, hosting Palestinians could bolster ties with Israel and open diplomatic channels with Washington. However, the country remains fragile after decades of civil war, with widespread poverty, food shortages, and political instability. Civil society leaders warn against becoming a “dumping ground” for displaced people, noting historical tensions between South Sudan’s largely Christian and animist population and the Arab Muslim north from which it seceded.
