Israel and Bolivia Reestablish Diplomatic Ties with Agreement Signed in Washington
Israel and Bolivia renewed formal diplomatic ties on Monday after their foreign ministers signed an agreement in Washington committing both governments to rebuild relations that had been cut for years. The document affirms that the two nations “aspire to restore full diplomatic relations, friendship and cooperation,” and notes that ambassadors will be named in the near future.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar represented Israel at the signing ceremony, while Bolivian Foreign Minister Fernando Huanacuni Mamani signed on behalf of La Paz. Bolivia’s Finance and Jose Gabriel Espinoza Yañez also took part in the event, which concluded a series of discussions aimed at reestablishing diplomatic channels.
The agreement outlines an immediate resumption of official contacts and lays the groundwork for broader cooperation once ambassadors are in place. Israeli officials said the move opens the door for renewed dialogue after a prolonged break that limited political and economic engagement. Bolivian representatives signaled their readiness to move forward and emphasized that the renewed ties are meant to strengthen bilateral collaboration.
Saar described the agreement as a constructive step that provides both sides with an opportunity to rebuild trust. Bolivian officials echoed that sentiment, saying they look forward to increased exchanges and practical cooperation in the coming period.
While no additional policy details were disclosed at the ceremony, both delegations indicated that further discussions would follow once diplomatic missions resume full operations.
The return to normalized relations comes at a time when Israel has been expanding its diplomatic outreach in Latin America and other regions. The signing in Washington marks the formal beginning of a process expected to include the appointment of ambassadors, reopening of channels for government-to-government work, and renewed engagement across multiple fields.
Officials from both countries framed the agreement not only as a formal restoration but also as a signal of intent to strengthen ties beyond their previous level. With the document now signed, Jerusalem and La Paz plan to begin the practical steps needed to reactivate their diplomatic presence, with additional announcements anticipated once the new ambassadors are selected.
