Iran warned that it would answer any threat without limiting the geographic scope of its targets as US and Iranian officials prepared for talks in Doha.
Ebrahim Azizi, head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian Parliament, stated that Tehran “will respond to any threat immediately and with greater determination than before.”
“There will be no geographical limitations on our targets. Iran will be the one to decide when the war ends,” Azizi added.
An American delegation is expected to join Iranian officials in Doha after preliminary negotiations produced initial understandings, the Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported. Sources cited by the newspaper said the discussions covered Iran’s nuclear program, navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and financial incentives for Tehran.
President Donald Trump expressed caution about the negotiations at a Halloween event at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
“Good, but they’re not very trustworthy. They make a deal and then back out. We’ll see if they make a deal,” President Trump said.
He added, “We’re not really in a hurry because we destroyed their navy, air force, air defenses, production capabilities, and also the nuclear program. I would say we have one or two sites left to deal with–but we can do that in 10 minutes and we have a plan.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump spoke by phone Saturday morning US time, the Wall Street Journal reported. The subject of their conversation was not specified. The Journal said the call came against the backdrop of US preparations to resume strikes on Iran and days after Trump received a briefing from senior military officials on options for renewed significant military operations in the region.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “the president has made no decision,” about whether to strike Iran, adding that “the president prefers a different approach.”
“If he wanted to act in that way, he would have done so weeks ago, or even months ago.” Rubio said he also did not know whether there was a defined timeline for the Qatar-led talks between the US and Iran.
