Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is set to visit Russia this week ahead of a planned second round of nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington aimed at resolving Iran’s decades-long nuclear standoff. The diplomatic effort comes as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened military action if no deal is reached.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Araqchi is also scheduled to discuss the developments of the Oman talks with Russian officials. Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that the second round of talks is scheduled to resume in Muscat on Saturday, although conflicting reports indicate Italy might host additional sessions under Omani mediation. A senior Iranian official told Reuters the meeting was merely an initial step meant to set the basis for future negotiations.
On Saturday, Araqchi and Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, held “positive” and “constructive” talks in Oman. The discussions were conducted indirectly, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi shuttling between the two delegations stationed in separate rooms at his palace in Muscat. Both sides described the atmosphere as calm and hopeful, despite underlying skepticism from Tehran regarding Trump’s hardline approach.
