Iran has executed nine men convicted of belonging to the Islamic State (IS) group following their involvement in a deadly 2018 clash with security forces in the country’s western region, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan news agency. The executions, carried out by hanging, were approved by Iran’s Supreme Court.
The nine were found guilty of armed confrontation with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), carrying weapons, and assassinating three IRGC members. Iranian authorities said they were arrested in January 2018 while attempting to launch attacks in border and central areas of Iran. During the operation to capture them, Iranian forces killed several IS members, seized a cache of weapons—including a PK machine gun, 50 grenades, ammunition, and thermal cameras—and suffered the loss of three IRGC personnel.
Mizan said the group had intended to carry out terrorist operations but was stopped by a joint IRGC and intelligence force raid. “They had planned attacks on multiple targets inside Iran,” the report stated.
Although IS’s influence in the region has since waned, the group carried out several attacks in Iran in recent years, including a 2017 assault in Tehran and dual suicide bombings in 2024 that killed at least 94 people.
The men were reportedly hanged without trials. Iran’s rate of executions has sharply increased in recent years, with human rights activists reporting an average of one person executed every six hours over the past eight months.
