Investigations Open After Border Police Officer Killed in Netanya Shootout

Authorities have opened investigations into a violent incident in Netanya on Saturday in which a Border Police officer fired an M16 near residential buildings before shooting at responding police officers and being fatally wounded in an ensuing gun battle.

Border Police Sgt. David Hoyer Amrani, 20, began firing the weapon into the air and near residential buildings in the city’s Kiryat Hasharon neighborhood, according to media reports.

Residents fled for cover as police responded to the area. Amrani then opened fire at the officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which he was shot. He later died of his wounds.

Because police officers were involved in the shooting, the case is expected to be transferred to the Justice Ministry’s Police Internal Investigations Department, Ynet reported.

The Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department said Amrani had not received treatment through the department for post-traumatic stress disorder and was not known to its system as a patient suffering from the condition.

Amrani enlisted for compulsory service in the Border Police in August 2024. After completing his training, he served in the West Bank, including in Hebron.

Sources told Ynet that nothing in the days before Saturday’s incident had indicated that Amrani might engage in violent behavior. He had prepared and ironed his uniform ahead of his upcoming work week.

Attorney Idan Kleiman, chairman of the IDF Disabled Veterans Organization, told Ynet that he understood Amrani had previously requested a transfer to another sector.

Amrani’s funeral is scheduled to take place Sunday at the Even Yehuda cemetery.
