The Israeli military announced the successful rescue of Qaid Farhan al-Qadi, a 52-year-old Israeli Bedouin, who had been held hostage by Hamas in Gaza for more than 10 months. Al-Qadi was rescued on Tuesday by Israeli special forces during a complex operation in southern Gaza, where he had been held in one of Hamas’ tunnels. Al-Qadi, a security guard at Kibbutz Magen near the Gaza border, was abducted on October 7 during Hamas’ attacks. The rescue mission was carried out by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) elite units Shayetet 13 and Yahalom, along with the Shin Bet security agency.
The IDF reported that the operation was based on precise intelligence and executed with precision, marking the fourth successful rescue since October 7, though the first in a tunnel. Al-Qadi, who has two wives and 11 children, was flown to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba for medical evaluation and reunited with his family. His brother, Khatem al-Qadi, expressed overwhelming joy, comparing the moment to the arrival of a new baby.
The Hostage Families Forum welcomed the news but emphasized the need for a negotiated deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant hailed the operation as part of Israel’s broader efforts in the ongoing war against Hamas. Since October 7, 104 of the 251 hostages taken by Hamas have been freed or rescued, while 147, including 34 confirmed dead, remain in Gaza.
