Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels launched attacks on multiple ships in the Red Sea on Monday, American and British military sources confirmed Tuesday.
Three smaller Houthi vessels, two crewed and the third unmanned, attacked the Panama-flagged and Israeli-owned MT Bently I earlier on Monday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), an arm of the British military responsible for coordinating naval communications.
Fighters aboard the two manned vessels reportedly opened fire on the MT Bently I while the uncrewed boat collided directly with the hull, according to the UKMTO.
The captain of MT Bently reported that the vessel received at least three waves of missiles, all of which exploded in the nearby water.
Later that day, a Houthi drone also struck the MT Chios Lion, an oil tanker flying the Liberian flag and owned by the Marshall Islands.
The United States Military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed UKMTO’s reporting of the attacks early Tuesday morning and called out the Houthi’s “continued reckless behavior” in a statement.
“The Houthis claim to be acting on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza, and yet they are targeting and threatening the lives of third-country nationals who have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza.”
Neither of the attacked ships reported any injuries, and all the crews onboard are safe.
