An Israeli soldier was killed and another seriously wounded early Saturday in a friendly fire incident during an operation in southern Lebanon, the military said.
The soldier killed was identified as Sgt. First Class Guy Ludar, 21, of the Commando Brigade’s Maglan Unit, from Yuvalim. The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. in the village of Shebaa, where Maglan commandos had carried out a raid to capture a suspect allegedly aiding Hezbollah.
According to an initial Israel Defense Forces (IDF) investigation, one soldier opened fire on two fellow troops after mistakenly identifying them as the captured Hezbollah fighters fleeing. Ludar was fatally shot, and the second soldier sustained serious injuries.
The operation was part of ongoing Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon following Hezbollah’s entry into the conflict. The group joined the fighting in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Since March 2, a total of 11 Israeli soldiers have been killed in operations linked to the conflict with Hezbollah
