Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s backing for Somalia’s fight against terrorism during a phone conversation on Tuesday with newly appointed Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalan Abdi Ali Dhaay, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced.
Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s commitment to providing support “in all its forms” to help Somalia combat terrorism and extremism. He also emphasized Egypt’s dedication to preserving Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity, and the strength of its national institutions, while working to promote peace and stability throughout the Horn of Africa.
During the call, both officials agreed on the need for greater coordination to bolster development and security in the region. They also discussed the importance of maintaining regular dialogue through regional and international platforms to tackle shared challenges facing countries in the Horn of Africa.
Dhaay, who was appointed on Sunday during a cabinet reshuffle by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, thanked Egypt for its long-standing support. He praised Cairo’s involvement in the African Union Mission in Somalia and said his country valued Egypt’s continued efforts to help stabilize Somalia.
The Horn of Africa remains a region of strategic concern due to persistent threats from terrorist organizations such as al-Shabab. Egypt has historically maintained strong ties with Somalia, viewing its stability as crucial to regional security and Red Sea maritime interests.
