Construction on Jordan Border Fence To Start Soon, Israeli Defense Minister Says

By The Media Line Staff

Israel will soon begin construction on a security barrier along its border with Jordan, Defense Minister Israel Katz announced Monday during a visit to the West Bank’s Jordan Valley. Katz said that the barrier, which is intended to prevent weapons smuggling and attacks and to bolster Israeli settlements along the border, is expected to be completed within three years.

The fence is set to cover more than 250 miles of Israel’s border with Jordan, extending from the southern Golan Heights, through the West Bank, to the Sands of Samar region near Eilat. Katz described the project as part of a broader security strategy, citing concerns that weapons smuggled from Jordan have been used in attacks against Israelis. He also warned of Iran’s potential efforts to use proxies to target Israel from the east.

Israel began engineering plans for the border fence with Jordan in November 2024 following a deadly attack at the Allenby Bridge Crossing, in which three Israelis and a Jordanian gunman were killed. The state currently has nearly 700 miles of security fences around its borders, including a 150 mile-barrier between Israel and Egypt constructed starting in 2010.

The Israeli Defense Ministry has allocated 5.2 billion shekels (about $1.4 billion) for the barrier with Jordan, which will be built by the Border and Seam Directorate in coordination with the military’s Central and Southern Commands. Katz also announced plans to establish new military outposts along the fence route, reinforcing Israel’s presence in the area.
