Abbas Meets Putin in Moscow, Calls for Ceasefire and End to Gaza Blockade

By The Media Line Staff

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday, urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, a full Israeli withdrawal, and unrestricted humanitarian access. The meeting took place on the sidelines of Russia’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.

Abbas condemned what he described as Israeli aggression in both Gaza and the West Bank, accusing Israel of imposing a “total blockade” since March 2 and targeting civilians. He demanded that food, water, fuel, and medicine be allowed into the Gaza Strip without restriction and called for an end to Israeli military operations in Judea and Samaria.

He also restated his opposition to US proposals suggesting the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza and the rebuilding of the enclave as a tourism-driven “Middle Eastern Riviera.”

“We are against the removal of Palestinians from Palestine, as President Trump spoke about,” Abbas said, calling the plan “unacceptable.”

Putin reiterated Russia’s support for Palestinian self-determination and backed calls to end the war, deliver aid, and prevent forced displacement of Gaza residents.

The meeting included several senior Palestinian officials, including Ahmad Majdalani of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, presidential adviser Yasser Abbas, media official Ahmad Assaf, and PLO Ambassador to Russia Abdul Hafiz Nofal.

Abbas and Putin last met in October 2024. Friday’s meeting signals continued coordination between the Palestinian Authority and Moscow, particularly as international efforts to broker a ceasefire stall and humanitarian conditions in Gaza deteriorate.
