IDF Chief Stands Firm on Hostage Negotiations, Challenges Netanyahu’s Military Strategy

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi stated during a press conference at Palmachim Airbase in central Israel that reaching an agreement with Hamas for the release of hostages in exchange for a cease-fire and other concessions is a moral necessity. He emphasized that the military is fully capable of managing the consequences of such a deal.

Lt. Gen. Halevi addressed criticisms from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had argued that previous military pressures were insufficient for progress in hostage negotiations. Netanyahu’s remarks came after he directed increased military action in Rafah, leading to new developments in the negotiation efforts.

Despite these political tensions, Halevi affirmed the IDF’s commitment to continuing their operations against Hamas until all hostages are freed and security for Israeli citizens is ensured. He also reassured that the IDF would respect and enforce any agreements sanctioned by the political leadership.

The press conference also covered the IDF’s ongoing inquiries into the tragic events of October 7, when Hamas terrorists killed approximately 1,200 Israelis. Halevi praised the bravery displayed by soldiers during these attacks and committed to learning from the operational mistakes made.
