(Reuters) – Highlights of the eighth day at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows on Sunday (times GMT):

0130 SABALENKA CRUSHES BUCSA, DJOKOVIC SETS UP FRITZ CLASH

Belarusian top seed Aryna Sabalenka continued her title defence with a dominant 6-1 6-4 victory over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.

On the men’s side, four-times champion Novak Djokovic also produced a comprehensive 6-3 6-3 6-2 win over German Jan-Lennard Struff. Next up for the Serbian seventh seed is last year’s runner-up Taylor Fritz, who knocked out Czech Tomas Machac.

1956 ALCARAZ DEFEATS RINDERKNECH

Spanish second seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(3) 6-3 6-4 and will meet Czech 20th seed Jiri Lehecka in the quarter-finals.

Czech 20th seed Jiri Lehecka beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6(4) 6-4 2-6 6-2 to reach the U.S. Open last eight for the first time in his career.

1635 PEGULA EASES INTO QUARTER-FINALS

Last year’s runner-up Jessica Pegula brushed aside American compatriot Ann Li 6-1 6-2 to reach the U.S. Open singles quarter-finals for the third time in her career.
