NEW YORK (Reuters) – Highlights of the eighth day at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows on Monday (times GMT):

0355 SINNER CRUISES INTO THE QUARTER-FINALS

Jannik Sinner beat American Tommy Paul 7-6(3) 7-6(5) 6-1 to secure a spot in the quarter-finals. The world number one will take on Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev for a place in the semis.

0054 DE MINAUR GETS PAST THOMPSON

10th seed Alex de Minaur beat Jordan Thompson 6-0 3-6 6-3 7-5 in an all-Australian showdown to set up a quarter-final against Briton Jack Draper.

0046 SWIATEK MARCHES ON

Top seed Iga Swiatek overpowered Russian 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-4 6-1 to set up a quarter-final clash with sixth seed Jessica Pegula in her bid for a sixth Grand Slam title.

The 22-year-old, who is a Ted Lasso fan, said she tried to stay focused after seeing the show’s leading actor Jason Sudeikis in the crowd: “I hope he appreciates my mentality because that’s what Ted Lasso is all about”.

2129 HADDAD MAIA SEES OFF WOZNIACKI

Brazilian 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia knocked out former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 3-6 6-3 to earn a quarter-final meeting with Czech Karolina Muchova.

“I just try to work hard every single day of my life…And I feel privilege to be here to represent not only Brazil, but South America,” said the 28-year-old, who became the first Brazilian woman to reach the last eight at Flushing Meadows since Maria Bueno in 1976.

Former champion Daniil Medvedev had little trouble overcoming Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-0 6-1 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals. The Russian fifth seed will meet the winner of the clash between top-ranked Jannik Sinner and Tommy Paul.

1936 FIRE ALARM ISSUE

A technical problem caused by a fire alarm in the building housing where the electronic line calling system Hawkeye operates briefly halted matches between Beatriz Haddad Maia and Caroline Wozniacki at Louis Armstrong Stadium and Daniil Medvedev and Nuno Borges at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

1826 DRAPER RALLIES INTO QUARTER-FINALS

Britain’s Jack Draper dispatched unseeded Czech Tomas Machac 6-3 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. The 22-year-old will face the winner of the all-Australian clash between Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson.

1739 PEGULA ENDS SHNAIDER’S RUN

American sixth seed Jessica Pegula reached the U.S. Open quarter-finals for a second time after securing a 6-4 6-2 win over 20-year-old Russian 18th seed Diana Shnaider.

1618 MUCHOVA UPSETS PAOLINI TO REACH QUARTERS

Unseeded Czech Karolina Muchova knocked out Italian fifth seed Jasmine Paolini, beating the French Open and Wimbledon finalist 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

Muchova, 28, had reached the U.S. Open semis last year.
