Stopgap spending bill to avert shutdown falls short in US Senate

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A temporary spending bill that would avert an Oct. 1 federal government shutdown fell short in the U.S. Senate on Friday,  as Democrats withheld support while demanding higher spending for healthcare.
