Spring training roundup: Phillies outslug Pirates 14-10

Rafael Marchan hit two doubles for four runs in one inning to help a Philadelphia Phillies defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates’ split squad 14-10 in a spring-training offensive showcase Friday in Bradenton, Fla.
The Phillies dropped a nine-run fourth inning after the Pirates went ahead 3-0 on Ryan O’Hearn’s three-run home run in the third. Marchan plated Philadelphia’s first run, and after Felix Reyes tied the game with a double and two batters drew bases-loaded walks, Marchan hit a three-run double to center. Bryan De La Cruz finished the inning with an RBI double of his own.
The Pirates didn’t go quietly, as Yordany De Los Santos, Derek Berg and Omar Alfonzo homered to pull them into a 10-10 tie by the eighth. But De La Cruz scored the go-ahead run on an error in the top of the ninth and Carson DeMartini added cushion with a three-run blast to center.
Otto Kemp and Paul McIntosh joined Marchan and De La Cruz with two hits for the Phillies, while Jared Triolo went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for the Pirates.
Blue Jays 9, Pirates (ss) 2
Nathan Lukes’ two-out grand slam in the fourth inning turned the tide and Toronto took down the visiting Pittsburgh split squad in Dunedin, Fla.
Yohendrick Pinango and Edward Micheletti added late home runs to pad the margin for the Blue Jays. Jose Berrios allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three in a four-inning start.
The Pirates went in front on Termarr Johnson’s single and Dominic Fletcher’s solo shot before the Jays rallied. Starter Bubba Chandler had one earned run and three walks but struck out five in three innings.
Cardinals 10, Orioles 2
Nelson Velazquez and Joshua Baez homered, Yohel Pozo went 2-for-2 with a two-run double and visiting St. Louis beat Baltimore in Sarasota, Fla.
Jeremy Rivas and Ivan Herrera, who each had two hits, broke a 1-1 tie with RBI singles in the fifth. Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy struck out four and scattered one run and four hits through four innings for his second win of the spring.
Ryan Mountcastle and Willy Vasquez had the RBIs for the Orioles. Chris Bassett allowed one unearned run in his three-inning start, but Albert Suarez was dinged for seven runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings of middle relief.
Tigers 11, Red Sox 3
Matt Vierling went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs, Jace Jung smacked three RBI singles and host Detroit walloped Boston in Lakeland, Fla.
The Tigers scored all 11 of their runs between the fifth and eighth innings, long after Justin Verlander left his start having struck out four and given up two runs in two innings.
Kristian Campbell hit a two-run homer in the first for the Red Sox, and Andrews Opata had a solo shot in the ninth.
Astros 7, Nationals 1
John Garcia homered and Brice Matthews doubled to bring in two runs apiece for host Houston in a win over Washington in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Jose Altuve brought in a run on a double-play grounder for the Astros, who got four strikeouts from starter Mike Burrows in 3 2/3 innings of one-hit, no-run ball.
Daylen Lile homered and starter Cade Cavalli fanned six in four innings for the Nationals.
Rockies 11, Athletics 6
Brett Sullivan’s three-run homer in the first inning set an early tone, and Chad Stevens added a solo shot in the second as Colorado powered past the Athletics in Mesa, Ariz.
Rockies starter Chase Dollander earned the win after allowing one run on four hits in three innings, while J.T. Ginn was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits over three frames.
Colorado kept stacking damage with Kyle Karros’ two-run blast in the fifth and T.J. Rumfield’s solo homer in the seventh to build an 8-2 cushion. The A’s made a push behind Cade Marlowe’s homer and a three-run seventh, but Colorado answered with three in the ninth to close it out.
Guardians 5, Angels 3
Gabriel Arias drove in two runs as Cleveland erased an early deficit and beat Los Angeles in Goodyear, Ariz.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out five and allowed two runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 innings. Connor Brogdon picked up the win with a scoreless fifth and Will Dion closed it with a scoreless ninth for the save. Angels lefty Reid Detmers went four innings, yielding two runs while fanning five.
Los Angeles struck first with two runs in the opening inning on Jeimer Candelario’s double and a pair of Cleveland errors. The Guardians tied it in the second on Daniel Schneemann’s RBI fielder’s choice and Arias’ RBI double, then moved ahead for good with Petey Halpin’s run-scoring double and Chase DeLauter’s RBI single in the fifth.
Giants 6, Reds 3
Luis Matos doubled in a run and later homered, and Matt Chapman launched a two-run shot as San Francisco beat Cincinnati in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Tyler Mahle worked two shutout innings for the Giants, walking three and striking out four, while Andrew Abbott fanned five but was tagged for four runs in 2 2/3 innings for the Reds.
San Francisco struck first on Victor Bericoto’s sacrifice fly in the first, then stretched the lead on Matos’ RBI double in the second and Chapman’s two-run homer in the third. Cincinnati got on the board in the sixth on Ke’Bryan Hayes’ RBI infield single, but Matos answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.
Mariners 5, Rangers 1
Cole Young homered twice and drove in three runs as Seattle knocked off Texas in Surprise, Ariz.
Kade Anderson earned the win with three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Jack Leiter took the loss after giving up two runs in 3 2/3, including solo shots by Young and Brennen Davis.
Young opened the scoring with a two-out homer in the third, and Davis made it 2-0 with a leadoff blast in the fourth. Young’s two-run homer in the sixth broke it open before Evan Carter finally put the Rangers on the board with a solo shot later in the inning.
White Sox 6, Diamondbacks (ss) 0
Oliver Dunn and Jarred Kelenic blasted three-run homers as Chicago shut out Arizona in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Andrew Kay earned the win after allowing two hits and no runs over three innings, and Tanner McDougal followed with three scoreless frames of his own as the White Sox staff limited the Diamondbacks to four hits.
Chicago did all its damage with two swings: Dunn’s two-out shot to center in the second made it 3-0, then Kelenic’s three-run homer in the fourth pushed it to 6-0. Arizona went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Brewers 6, Diamondbacks (ss) 2
Mike Boeve belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning as Milwaukee pulled away for a win over Arizona in Phoenix.
Brewers starter Chad Patrick allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five in three innings. Brian Fitzpatrick worked a scoreless sixth to earn the win, and the Milwaukee bullpen held the Diamondbacks to one hit after the fourth inning.
After trailing by a run two different times in the early innings, the Brewers flipped the game in the sixth on Luis Lara’s RBI double and Jesus Made’s run-scoring single. Eric Bitonti added an RBI single in the eighth after Boeve’s round tripper to close out the scoring.
Braves 4, Twins 1
DaShawn Keirsey Jr. sparked a four-run fourth inning and Atlanta beat Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.
Minnesota scored first on Ryan Jeffers’ RBI single in the opening inning but went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position the rest of the way as Atlanta’s pitching kept traffic from turning into damage.
The Braves’ rally featured Keirsey’s RBI single, a run that scored on a balk, Aaron Schunk’s RBI single and Jose Azocar’s RBI double. Reynaldo Lopez worked four innings for Atlanta, allowing one run, and Martin Perez followed with three scoreless frames.
Yankees 3, Rays 0
Trent Grisham knocked in two runs with a two-out single in the second inning as New York defeated Tampa Bay in Tampa, Fla.
The Yankees’ staff set the tone, combining for a three-hit shutout with 18 strikeouts. Cam Schlittler earned the win after working 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, and Danny Watson fanned three in a scoreless ninth to secure the save.
New York opened the scoring when Grisham’s line drive to right brought home Oswald Cabrera and Max Schuemann. The final run came in the eighth, when Kenedy Corona scored on a wild pitch.
Marlins 2, Mets 0
Connor Norby and Heriberto Hernandez hit solo homers as Miami shut out New York in Jupiter, Fla., handing the Mets a quiet night at the plate.
Marlins starter Max Meyer struck out four and allowed two hits in three scoreless innings, and four relievers followed with six more shutout frames. Josh Ekness worked a clean ninth to earn the save. Mets left-hander Sean Manaea took the loss after giving up Norby’s first-inning blast, the only run he allowed in three innings of work.
Norby’s shot opened the scoring, and Hernandez made it 2-0 with a homer in the sixth. The Mets finished with six hits but went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Dodgers 6, Royals 0
Freddie Freeman drove in three runs and Teoscar Hernandez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs as Los Angeles blanked Kansas City in Phoenix.
Ryder Ryan earned the win with two scoreless innings, and seven Dodgers relievers finished a three-hit shutout while striking out 13 total. Kansas City starter Mitch Spence took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings.
Los Angeles jumped in front on Freeman’s RBI single, then kept rolling on an RBI double by Mookie Betts and an RBI double by Hernandez in the first. In the fourth, Freeman’s infield single plated two more before Hernandez knocked in the sixth run with a two-out single.
Padres 3, Cubs 0
German Marquez and four relievers combined on a seven-hit, 14-strikeout shutout as San Diego blanked Chicago in Peoria, Ariz.
Ben Brown took the loss after allowing three runs in 2 2/3 innings, walking three, striking out three and throwing a wild pitch. The Cubs finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base, despite two-hit games from Matt Shaw and Moises Ballesteros.
San Diego opened the scoring in the first when Gavin Sheets drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Miguel Andujar. The Padres added two more in the third on Nick Castellanos’ RBI infield single and a Brown wild pitch that allowed Jake Cronenworth to score while Ty France struck out.
