Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence out with a concussion after violent hit from Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was carted off the field after taking a violent elbow to the facemask from Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. It prompted two sideline-clearing scuffles. Lawrence clinched both fists after the hit, movements consistent with what’s referred to as the “fencing response,” which can be common after a traumatic brain injury. Lawrence was on the ground for several minutes as teammates came to his defense and mobbed Al-Shaair. Lawrence eventually was helped to his feet and loaded into the front seat of a cart to be taken off the field. He was not transported to a hospital. He was quickly ruled out with a concussion, though. Al-Shaair and Jaguars rookie cornerback Jarrian Jones were ejected after the first altercation.

Liverpool beats Man City 2-0 to move nine points clear in the Premier League

Liverpool is in control of the Premier League title race. Manchester City is in free fall. Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the standings after a 2-0 win against the four-time defending champion. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah exposed the gap between the title rivals and emphasized the deepening crisis at City. Defeat left Pep Guardiola’s serial title winners languishing fifth in the standings and 11 points adrift of Liverpool. Ruben Amorim has got Manchester United fans smiling again after a 4-0 win against Everton. The Old Trafford crowd serenaded United’s players with “ole” late in Amorim’s first Premier League game at Old Trafford.

AP Top 25: Ohio St, Miami, Clemson drop; Texas, Penn St, Notre Dame, Georgia in line behind Oregon

Ohio State, Miami and Clemson plunged in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll following losses over the weekend. Eight of the top 10 teams moved up one spot and Oregon was No. 1 for the seventh straight week. The shakeup creates two top-five matchups in conference championship games Saturday: No. 1 Oregon against No. 3 Penn State in the Big Ten and No. 2 Texas against No. 5 Georgia in the SEC. No. 4 Notre Dame won’t play again until the College Football Playoff. Ohio State fell to No. 7, Miami to No. 14 and Clemson to No. 18.

Mikaela Shiffrin suffers abdominal puncture wound but no bone or ligament damage in Killington crash

KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a deep puncture wound on the right side of her abdomen and “severe muscle trauma” during a scary crash in a giant slalom race but no serious bone, ligament or organ damage. The five-time overall World Cup champion was sidelined for Sunday’s Killington Cup slalom race. There’s no timetable for her return to racing. Shiffrin was leading after the first run of the giant slalom on Saturday as she chased after her 100th World Cup win. With the finish line in sight on her second run, the 29-year-old leaned into the hill, lost an edge and slid into a gate, flipping head over skis. She slammed into another gate before coming to a stop in the protective fencing.

Purdue fires coach Ryan Walters after going 5-19 in his two seasons

A historically poor season has led Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski to fire coach Ryan Walters after just two seasons at the helm. Walters went 5-19 in his tenure with the Boilermakers while posting a 3-15 mark in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers finished 1-11, set a school single-season record by losing their final 11 games, went winless in conference play for only the third time since 1947 and failed to beat an FBS opponent for the first time since 2013 and only the second time in college football’s modern era. The Boilermakers still owe Walters nearly $9.5 million on his original five-year deal.

Ryggs Johnston wins Australian Open for first title. Jiyai Shin wins women’s event

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Unheralded American Ryggs Johnston has won his first professional title by claiming the Australian Open by three stokes, while South Korea’s Jiyai Shin claimed her second Women’s Australian Open which was played concurrently at two courses on the famed Melbourne sand belt. Johnston shot a 68 on Sunday to finish at 18-under 269 and three clear of Australian Curtis Luck (68), who had briefly taken the lead on the final stretch at Kingston Heath. The 24-year-old Montana native, currently ranked 953rd, is the first American to win the Stonehaven Cup since PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth won it for a second time in 2016. In the Women’s Australian Open, Shin shot a final round 70 for a 17-under-par 274 total to win by two shots from the twice defending champion Ashleigh Buhai.

College football players scuffle after flags come out following rivalry wins

It was flag day in college football. Michigan, North Carolina State and Florida celebrated road wins by displaying flags on the logos in the middle of their rivals’ stadiums. Arizona State put its own twist on the day with a trident. The results were predictable. Michigan scuffled with Ohio State after a group of Wolverines attempted to plant their flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium. There was a similar scene in North Carolina after at least one N.C. State player tried to plant a Wolfpack flag on UNC’s home field. And another skirmish in Florida after Gators edge rusher George Gumbs Jr. planted a flag on Florida State’s logo.

Lou Carnesecca, Hall of Fame coach who led St. John’s for 24 seasons, dies at 99

NEW YORK (AP) — Lou Carnesecca, the excitable St. John’s coach whose outlandish sweaters became an emblem of his team’s rousing Final Four run in 1985, has died at 99, just a few weeks shy of what would have been his 100th birthday. The university announced Carnesecca’s death Saturday night, saying in a statement the Hall of Fame coach died surrounded by his family and had “endeared himself to generations of New Yorkers with his wit and warmth.” Carnesecca was a treasured New York sports figure in his day, affection for “Looie” never wavering in a city with little patience for its players, coaches, executives and owners. He went 526-200 in 24 seasons over two stints at St. John’s before retiring in 1992.
