Ole Miss up to No. 4 in AP Top 25 with win over LSU, Tigers slip to No. 10, SEC has 10 teams ranked

Mississippi has moved into the top five of the AP Top 25 college football poll with its win over LSU. The Tigers remain in the top 10, and Florida and Mississippi State joined the rankings, giving the SEC 10 teams in the latest poll. The Rebels jumped to No. 4 after defeating LSU 32-24. LSU slipped to No. 10. Texas holds the top spot for the second week, followed by Georgia, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and Indiana. Louisville made the biggest gain, rising to No. 16. Texas A&M fell to No. 23 after losing to Kentucky.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams carted off with a right hamstring injury

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams left the team’s game against Minnesota in the fourth quarter with a right hamstring injury. Williams got hurt while scrambling toward the sideline deep in Vikings territory with about 7 1/2 minutes left. The 24-year-old Williams was helped off the field. Williams was 15 for 26 for 138 yards with an interception. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft also had five carries for 42 yards in rainy conditions at Soldier Field. Tyson Bagent replaced Williams, and the drive ended when Cairo Santos’ 23-yard field goal was blocked by Isaiah Rodgers — preserving Minnesota’s 6-3 lead.

Man City wins 8-goal thriller against Sunderland, Man United rescues late draw

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — No Pep Guardiola. No problem. Not yet anyway for Manchester City after moving clear at the top of the Premier League with a 5-3 win over Sunderland. New coach Enzo Maresca extended his perfect winning start to the season to five games Sunday and goes into the international break three points ahead of second-place Arsenal. A chaotic match at the Etihad Stadium saw City twice squander the lead and Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey outshine Erling Haaland with a hat trick. Manchester United left it late to salvage a 1-1 draw at Fulham and avoid three straight defeats in all competitions. Alexander Isak scored his fourth goal of the season as Liverpool beat Bournemouth 1-0. Leeds and Crystal Palace drew 0-0.

Olivia Miles breaks Caitlin Clark’s WNBA rookie points record in Lynx win over Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Olivia Miles broke Caitlin Clark’s WNBA record for points by a rookie in a season on Sunday in the Minnesota Lynx’s 101-89 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Miles was tied with Clark with 769 points coming into the game and moved atop the list by hitting a free throw in the second quarter. She now has 480 points. The Lynx rookie came into the game averaging 19.7 points, 6.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds and was a big reason the team had the best record in the WNBA. Miles and Clark both accomplished their feats in 40 games.

Tyler Shough and the Saints produce two big drives at the end to topple the Ravens 24-17

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Shough scored on a fourth-down sneak with 1:28 remaining, and the New Orleans Saints rallied to a 24-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens. New Orleans had first down from the 2 before a penalty and a costly incomplete pass. On fourth-and-goal, the Saints decided against a short field goal, and Shough was ruled to have scored on a 1-yard sneak. The play was upheld after a review. The Ravens, who didn’t have a first down on either of their previous two drives, made it to the New Orleans 37, but Lamar Jackson’s deep pass was intercepted by Julian Blackmon with 13 seconds left.

J.J. Spaun wins Europe’s flagship event after being left off US Presidents Cup team

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — J.J. Spaun was disappointed not to be picked for the U.S. Presidents Cup team. He responded by winning Europe’s flagship event in his debut at Wentworth. Spaun made four birdies on his last five holes for a 67. That turned into a two-shot victory when Manuel Elvira chopped up the 18th hole for a double bogey when a par would have forced a playoff. Elvira wound up in a four-way tie for second with Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and PGA champion Aaron Rai. Spaun says he played with a chip on his shoulder wanting to prove he should’ve been picked.

Longtime NFL executive Ernie Accorsi dies at 84

NEW YORK (AP) — Longtime NFL executive Ernie Accorsi has died. He was 84. The New York Giants announced his death along with his family. Accorsi went from public relations in the league office in the 1970s before rejoining the Baltimore Colts as assistant general manager and getting the GM job in 1982. The Hershey, Pennsylvania, native, worked in that role with the Cleveland Browns and then the Giants, building the core that won the Super Bowl in the 2007 season. He is a member of the team’s ring of honor.

Zverev powers Germany into Davis Cup Final 8 with a swift win over Prizmic, Britain also advances

HALLE, Germany (AP) — Alexander Zverev has sent Germany through to the Davis Cup Final 8 by defeating Dino Prizmic. Zverev secured a 3-1 victory over Croatia with a 6-2, 6-4 win. The match took just 77 minutes. Earlier Sunday, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz overcame Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-5, 6-2 to hand Zverev the opportunity to send Germany to the Final 8 in Italy in November. Britain also advanced on Sunday. Doubles pair Henry Patten and Neal Skupski beat Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-3, 6-4 to secure a 3-0 win over Ecuador. Spain secured an unassailable 3-0 lead over Chile.

Packers’ Jayden Reed and Zach Bako-Bewele carted off on consecutive plays vs Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed and right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele were carted off the field on consecutive plays during the game against the New York Jets. Reed has a neck injury and Bako-Bewele injured a knee. On the Packers’ second offensive play, Reed caught a short pass from Jordan Love and was hit hard by Demario Davis. Reed went down quickly and was face down on the turf, writhing in pain. Packers trainers and medical personnel immediately rushed onto the field to check on Reed. After a few minutes, Reed was strapped on a backboard and loaded onto the cart. Bako-Bewele was hurt on the next play.

Chinese 13-year-old Yu Zidi starts quickly in the pool at the Asian Games

NAGOYA, Japan (AP) — China dominated the first day of swimming at the Asian Games with Yu Zidi and defending Olympic champion Pan Zhanle taking gold. Yu easily won the 200-meter butterfly on Sunday at the Olympic pool in Tokyo, and Pan took the 100 free where he holds the world record set two years ago in Paris. Yu swam a personal-best time and fellow Chinese Chang Mohan took silver with bronze for Misa Okuzono of Japan. Yu is a swimmer the world is watching heading to next year’s world championships in Budapest, Hungary, and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
