BERLIN (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 22 points, Jackie Young added 18 and the U.S. beat France 97-79 to win its fifth consecutive women’s FIBA World Cup championship. The victory extended the Americans’ streak to 36 straight World Cup wins, dating to the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup, where they lost to Russia. Despite the final score, this one wasn’t easy as the Americans trailed by 14 points in the first half. But the U.S. improved to 9-0 in gold-medal games since finishing second in 1983 to the Soviet Union. Dominique Malonga scored 21 points and Gabby Williams added 20 for France.

Rams star Myles Garrett will have knee surgery, expected to miss 4 games, AP source says

Los Angeles Rams star Myles Garrett is expected to miss at least four games because of a knee injury that requires arthroscopic surgery, according to a person with knowledge of the edge rusher’s status. The person, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, says the Rams will place Garrett on injured reserve. The two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year was ineffective in the Rams’ 27-7 loss to San Francisco in Australia on Thursday night. Garrett will be eligible to return in Week 6.

Alexander Zverev beats Ben Shelton to win the US Open title and extend a drought by American men

NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev won his second major championship and kept American men without a Grand Slam title since 2003, beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday in the U.S. Open final. Zverev finally broke through in the majors by winning this year’s French Open and followed up by finally adding the title in New York that he so painfully let slip away in 2020. The No. 1 seed in a Grand Slam for the first time, he capitalized on Shelton’s shaky start in his first major final. Shelton was trying to win the first title by an American man since Andy Roddick won in Flushing Meadows in 2003.

Texas rises to No. 1 in AP poll, Ohio State and Oregon tumble and Michigan returns to the Top 25

After knocking off top-ranked Ohio State, Texas is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll. Ohio State dropped out of the top five for the first time in two seasons. Oregon dropped 15 spots to No. 21 after losing at Oklahoma State. Michigan has returned to the poll at No. 19 following a win over Oklahoma, which fell to No. 24. Georgia and Notre Dame held their places at No. 2 and No. 3. Indiana and Miami moved up to No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

Josh Allen connects with Joshua Palmer for a late TD and Bills beat Texans 36-31 in wild opener

HOUSTON (AP) — Josh Allen threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer with 1:36 remaining to lift the Buffalo Bills to a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans in a back-and-forth season opener. Allen had 334 yards passing with two touchdowns and ran for two more scores to get his first win in Houston after losing his previous four games at Reliant Stadium. The Texans led 31-30 when Allen split two defenders to find Palmer. The 2-point conversion failed. The Texans had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but Greg Rousseau had his second strip sack of the day, taking down C.J. Stroud at the Buffalo 28.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Caleb Williams threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 65 yards and two more scores as the Chicago Bears defeated the Carolina Panthers 59-37 in the highest-scoring season opener in NFL history. Chicago and Carolina scored eight more points than the previous record of 88 set in Tampa Bay’s 48-40 win over New Orleans in 2018. Coach Ben Johnson’s prolific Bears also broke a franchise record for points in an opener, a mark that had stood since 1948, when Chicago hung 45 points on Green Bay at Wrigley Field. The 59 points were the most allowed by the Panthers in team history.

Vikings QB Murray leaves his debut in the 1st quarter with a concussion after a hit to the head

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray took a hit to the head at the end of the run and had to be pulled from the game in the first quarter of his debut with the team. Murray was placed in the concussion protocol for evaluation and announced by the Vikings as out for the rest of the game against the Green Bay Packers. Murray took off on a third-and-7 play from the Minnesota 33 and had his helmet knocked off by the shoulder of Packers cornerback Javon Bullard. The hit drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. Carson Wentz took over for Murray.

DEN BOSCH, Netherlands (AP) — The Solheim Cup is back in the hands of the Europeans. Lottie Woad had the honor of guaranteeing Team Europe would reach the 14 1/2 points needed to beat the United States. Woad’s 2-and-1 victory over Auston Kim left the official score at 14-10 but Carlota Ciganda was assured of at least a half-point from her next-to-last match against Jennifer Kupcho. That was one of four matches still out on the course and the winning point was officially clinched by Ciganda about 10 minutes later. Ciganda also won the point that retained the Solheim Cup for Europe in 2023. Europe wound up winning 15-13 and has won three of the last five editions.

Haaland’s disputed goal wins Manchester derby for 10-man City against United

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Erling Haaland’s hotly contested goal settled the 199th Manchester derby. The Norwegian struck in the 60th minute at Old Trafford to seal a 1-0 win for 10-man Manchester City over fierce rival Manchester United in the Premier League. At first the goal was ruled out for offside but after VAR review the onfield decision was overturned, sparking a roar of celebration from the away fans. The refereeing body that oversees Premier League matches, Pro Ref, said Sunday evening that it had made contact with United to acknowledge an “error of judgment” relating to the winning goal. Coventry’s nightmare start to the season continued with a 5-0 home loss to Brighton in the Premier League.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Melissa Jefferson-Wooden ran the fourth-fastest 200-meter time in history, 21.47 seconds, busting through the curve to wrap up a $300,000 weekend by completing the sprint double at Ultimate Championships. Jefferson-Wooden looked shocked herself when she peered at the clock and saw the time. “Wow!” she said, before heading to the winner’s circle to scoop up her second winner’s trophy in two nights. The only three faster times were a pair by Jamaican two-time world champion Shericka Jackson and the world record, set by Florence Griffith Joyner, which has stood at 21.34 since 1988. Earlier in the men’s race, Kenny Bednarek also completed the double, winning his 200 in 21.52 seconds. Josh Kerr won the 1,500 in 3 minutes, 29.35 seconds.
