Oregon and Penn State each moved up a spot in The Associated Press college football poll following thrilling wins in high-profile games. AP Top 25 newcomers Navy and Army are in the rankings together for the first time since 1960. Texas strengthened its hold on No. 1 with its 31-point win over Oklahoma. The Longhorns received 56 of 62 first-place votes, four more than last week. Oregon’s 32-31 win over Ohio State moved the Ducks to No. 2 for their highest ranking since the 2014 season. Penn State rose to No. 3 with a 33-30 overtime win at Southern California.
Jackson outduels Daniels and Henry runs for two TDs as Ravens beat Commanders 30-23
BALTIMORE (AP) — Lamar Jackson threw for 323 yards and a touchdown to outshine rookie Jayden Daniels and the Baltimore Ravens beat the Washington Commanders 30-23 for their fourth consecutive victory. Washington’s winning streak ended at four. Derrick Henry ran for 132 yards and scored his NFL-leading eighth and ninth TDs. Mark Andrews found the end zone for the first time this season with a 13-yard reception from Jackson. Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on two TDs but the Commanders struggled to get much of a running game going and could not contain Jackson and Henry.
Williams throws 4 TDs and TE Kmet handles long snaps for Bears in 35-16 rout of Jaguars in London
LONDON (AP) — Caleb Williams threw four touchdown passes — two each to receiver Keenan Allen and tight end Cole Kmet — and the Chicago Bears held a tea party celebration in the end zone in a 35-16 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Along with the rookie quarterback’s big day, Kmet chipped in by handling emergency long-snapping duties as the Bears (4-2) won their third straight game for the first time in nearly four years. The Jags fell to 1-5.
Mets add McNeil to NLCS roster while Dodgers drop Vesia and Rojas, add Kiermaier and Honeywell
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jeff McNeil was added to the New York Mets’ roster for the NL Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers after recovering from a broken right wrist. Pitcher Alex Vesia and infielder Miguel Rojas were left off the Dodgers’ roster for the series set to start Sunday while outfielder Kevin Kiermaier and pitcher Brent Honeywell were added after they sat out the NLDS. McNeil’s wrist was broken Sept. 6 hit by a pitch from Cincinnati’s Brandon Williamson. McNeil returned to action this weekend for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League.
Carlos Rodón will start AL Championship Series opener for the Yankees vs. the Guardians
NEW YORK (AP) — Left-hander Carlos Rodón will start the AL Championship Series opener for the New York Yankees against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night. Rodón rebounded to a 16-9 record with a 3.96 ERA over 172 innings in 32 starts in his second season with the Yankees after signing a $162 million, six-year contract. He went 3-8 with a career-worst 6.85 ERA over 14 outings in a 2023 season that didn’t start until July 7 because a strained left forearm and back stiffness. Rodón, 31, took the loss in Game 2 of the AL Division Series against Kansas City last Monday.
Doubs catches 2 TD passes in his return from a suspension to help Packers rout Cardinals 34-13
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Romeo Doubs returned from a one-game suspension and caught two of Jordan Love’s four touchdown passes in the Green Bay Packers’ 34-13 victory over the mistake-prone Arizona Cardinals. Doubs missed the Packers’ 24-19 victory over the Los Angeles Rams for conduct detrimental to the team after missing two practices. He scored Sunday on receptions of 10 and 20 yards. Love also threw touchdown passes of 5 yards to Jayden Reed and 44 yards to Christian Watson while going 22 of 32 for 258 yards with one interception. His four touchdown passes matched a career high.
Billy Crystal and Spike Lee take their places at the Hall of Fame as basketball superfans
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Honored for his devotion to a basketball team that doesn’t have a Hall of Fame history, Billy Crystal couldn’t help but note the irony. He now has a ring before the Clippers do. The actor is being added to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s James F. Goldstein SuperFan Gallery and took part in a ceremony Sunday along with fellow entertainer and filmmaker Spike Lee and Philadelphia businessman Alan Horwitz. Longtime Lakers fan Jack Nicholson is also being added but the three-time Academy Award winner couldn’t attend. Lee dressed as he does at a Knicks game and sparred with fans wearing Boston Celtics green.
Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya smashes world record by nearly 2 minutes at Chicago Marathon
CHICAGO (AP) — Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya won the Chicago Marathon in 2:09:56 to break the world record by nearly two minutes. The 30-year-old bested the record set by Tigist Assefa of Ethiopian in 2:11:53 at the 2023 Berlin Marathon. Chepngetich became the first woman to break 2:10 in the marathon. She also won the Chicago Marathon in 2021 and 2022. John Korir of Kenya won the men’s race in 2:02:44. He and Chepngetich ran in honor of the late Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya, who broke the world record by 34 seconds at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. He died in February after his car hit a tree near a training area in Kenya.
England gets back to winning ways but interim coach Carsley says team needs a ‘world class’ manager
After three wins from four games as England interim coach, Lee Carsley has appeared to distance himself from taking on the job full time. A 3-1 victory against Finland in the Nations League on Sunday with goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice saw England get back to winning ways in Helsinki after the shock 2-1 home loss to Greece. But Carsley sounded uncertain about his credentials to succeed Gareth Southgate in one of the biggest management roles in world soccer. He said the job “deserves a world class coach that’s won trophies and been there and done it” and added that he’s “still on the path to that.”
Ohtani gives hope to young baseball players in Japan, and the rest of the country, too
TOKYO (AP) — Shohei Ohtani is widely regarded as the best player in Major League Baseball. That gives hope to youth baseball players in Japan, but also to the nation as it struggles with inflation and a sluggish economy. Ohtani-mania ebbs and flows in Japan. It is gaining steam again as the Dodgers and Ohtani head into the NLCS against the New York Mets. The peak will come if the Dodgers reach the World Series later this month.
