Mid rounds, big dreams: QBs selected later in NFL draft strive for success despite long odds
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Carson Beck had his fans and also some detractors during the NFL draft process, which explains why the quarterback fell to the third round before being selected by the Arizona Cardinals. Beck is part of an intriguing incoming class of quarterbacks that’s out to prove it’s not just Fernando Mendoza and the misfits. Guys like Beck, the Steelers’ Drew Allar and the Jets’ Cade Klubnik face uphill battles to achieve NFL stardom after being selected in the third and fourth rounds. But the league has a long history of great quarterbacks who weren’t early picks.
Aaron Rodgers hits the practice field after signing 1-year deal to stay with the Steelers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers didn’t waste time getting back to work with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The four-time MVP quarterback was on the field for voluntary organized team activities just minutes after signing a one-year deal to return for a 22nd season. The signing reunites Rodgers with first-year Pittsburgh coach Mike McCarthy. The two previously worked together in Green Bay, where they won a Super Bowl against Pittsburgh in the 2010 season. Last season, the 42-year-old quarterback led Pittsburgh to an AFC North title, throwing 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Jazz Age style: Chisholm borrows Stanton’s baggy pants, Caballero’s bat to spark turnaround
NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. is making a style statement with baggy pants, and it’s paying off for the New York Yankees. Chisholm has been wearing Giancarlo Stanton’s trousers and using José Caballero’s bat to break out of an early season slump. His tiebreaking, two-run homer led the Yankees to a 7-6 win over Toronto. Chisholm’s batting average had sunk to .200, but he’s been on a hot streak since switching gear. Teammates and Yankees fans love the look, and manager Aaron Boone doesn’t mind the sartorial strangeness. Chisholm’s new pants even have his name on them now.
