Luka Doncic agrees to a contract extension through 2028 with the Lakers, committing to his new team

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Slovenian superstar is bypassing a chance at free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team. The deal keeps Doncic with Los Angeles through 2028. The Slovenian superstar had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract. The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last February in a seismic trade for Anthony Davis. Doncic wrote on social media “Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud.”

Shannon Sharpe had given Sterling his first Super Bowl ring and now big brother was returning the favor on stage after the crowning moment of his football career. Eric Allen, Jared Allen and Antonio Gates joined Sterling Sharpe as the Class of 2025 was inducted into football immortality during a ceremony at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, where the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Detroit Lions 34-7 on Thursday night to kick off the NFL preseason.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds are playing the first MLB regular season game ever in the state of Tennessee after a rain delay before the first pitch. They are wrapping up a three-game series Saturday night at the MLB Speedway Classic on the diamond constructed on the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway. This racetrack is called “The Last Great Colosseum.” Organizers threw a big party mixing NASCAR themes with baseball with star Tim McGraw performing. Players for both teams stood in the back of pickup trucks and rode around the half-mile bullring racetrack. But a tarp came out as rain picked up before the first pitch was thrown.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dismisses Micah Parsons’ trade request as negotiation talk

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not intend to trade Micah Parsons after the star defensive end said he wants to leave the team amid a breakdown in negotiating a contract extension. Parsons remains at training camp after writing on social media Friday to request a trade, where he has yet to practice because of a back injury. He did not speak to reporters, walking off the field at the same time as Jones was fielding questions for more than 15 minutes. No stranger to public and prolonged disputes with standout players, Jones insisted the standoff with Parsons is no different than past situations.

Lionel Messi exits Inter Miami match with apparent hamstring injury

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi exited Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Necaxa after suffering an apparent injury in the opening minutes. Messi appeared to get tripped going for the ball in the eighth minute on Saturday night, fell to the ground and slammed his fist in frustration before walking toward midfield as play continued. He then sat on the pitch as trainers came and worked on his upper leg/right thigh area for a couple of minutes. He was subbed out in the 11th for Federico Redondo and immediately headed to the locker room.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upsets top-seeded Coco Gauff to reach Montreal quarterfinals

MONTREAL (AP) — Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals. Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults Saturday after having 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova. The 18-year-old Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, will face the winner of the late match between Lin Zhu of China and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain. In Rome in May, Gauff rallied to beat Mboko 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a round-of-64 match.

Cameron Young builds 5-shot lead at Wyndham Championship in search of first win

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Young is one round away from finally being a PGA Tour winner. He ran off four straight birdies in the Wyndham Championship and stretched his lead to eight shots at one point. Young made a pair of late birdies for a 65. That gives him a five-shot lead over Nico Echavarria. No one else is closer than eight shots. Young is widely considered the best player without a victory on a main tour. His bigger goal is trying to make the Ryder Cup. He grew up in New York and won a New York State Open at Bethpage Black.

Chargers LB Denzel Perryman arrested on weapons charges and remains in jail

Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman has been arrested on weapons charges during a traffic stop for vehicle code violations. Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department officials said Perryman was arrested Friday evening. Deputies discovered five firearms, including two assault weapons, in Perryman’s vehicle. Perryman was cooperative during the stop. He was booked on felony charges and is being held without bond at the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station. His agent confirmed he has not been released. Perryman is scheduled to appear at Inglewood Court on Tuesday. The Chargers said they are aware of the situation and are gathering information.

WNBA says fan was arrested for throwing sex toy in Atlanta, threatens ejection, ban moving forward

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA said Saturday that the individual who threw a sex toy on the court at an Atlanta Dream game earlier in the week was arrested and that any person throwing objects onto the court will be ejected from the arena and face a minimum one-year ban. The incident in Atlanta occurred late in the fourth quarter of the Dream’s game against Golden State on Tuesday in College Park, Georgia. On Friday, another sex toy was thrown in Chicago under a basket after a whistle was blown to stop play during the third quarter of Golden State’s 73-66 victory over the Sky.

Yamashita struggles and sees her Women’s British Open lead shrink to 1 shot over Kim

PORTHCAWL, Wales (AP) — Miyu Yamashita didn’t have the best of birthdays on the golf course. The 24-year-old from Japan struggled off the tee and on the greens. She shot a 74 in the Women’s British Open on Saturday. And now her three-shot lead is down to one shot over A Lim Kim going into the final round at Royal Porthcawl. Yamashita had one big highlight when she holed a 40-foot par putt across the 17th green that allowed her to keep the lead. Charley Hull of England shot 66 and went from 11 shots behind to only three shots off the lead.
