(WASHINGTON DC) – A letter from Senator Ron Johnson is circulating among Republican offices and could delay next Tuesday’s Senate leadership elections.

The proposal is gaining support from Senators John Kennedy, Rick Scott and Mike Lee, who have confirmed they back the effort. Kennedy says five signatures are needed to postpone the vote.

The push comes as Republicans confront a midterm defeat and calls for Senator John Thune to leave his leadership post. House Speaker Mike Johnson, credited with securing votes despite a narrow majority, has said he will not seek to lead Republicans in the minority next Congress.

Scott, who narrowly lost a leadership bid after the 2024 election, says he will not run this cycle.

If Johnson’s letter falls short of five co-signers, the elections could proceed as scheduled, leaving a potentially smaller field of candidates. For now, attention is on whether enough senators will sign before Tuesday’s vote begins.
