MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia is planning to hold high-level contacts with Syria in the near future, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.
President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on February 12, the first direct communication between the two since Sharaa’s forces overthrew Moscow’s ally Bashar al-Assad in December.
Russia is hoping to retain the use of two military bases in Syria.
