Southern University has found its next head football coach, hiring Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.

An official announcement from Southern is expected on Monday.

Faulk, 52, departs Colorado, where he was running backs coach for one season.

In February, Faulk joined Deion Sanders’ staff in Boulder, giving the Buffaloes three members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame on its coaching staff (along with Sanders and Warren Sapp).

Charged with improving a rushing attack that averaged a mere 65.1 yards per game, ranking 134th in the nation, Faulk helped the Buffaloes improve to 123.3 yards per game in 2025, tying for 107th in the country.

A first-team All-American three times at San Diego State and a 2017 addition to the College Football Hall of Fame, Faulk arguably made an even bigger impression in the pros.

In the NFL, he was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2000, a three-time Offensive Player of the Year, and a three-time first-team All-Pro. The No. 2 overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, he won the Super Bowl with the then-St. Louis Rams and its “Greatest Show on Turf” in 2000.

Faulk played 12 seasons in the NFL and tallied 12,279 rushing yards, 6,875 receiving yards and 136 total touchdowns, being elected to the Hall of Fame in 2011.
