All-Star closer Edwin Diaz has opted out of his deal with the New York Mets, multiple outlets reported on Monday.

The 31-year-old right-hander holds $18.5 million player options in 2026 and 2027, and the Mets have a $20.4 million team option for 2028.

Diaz enters free agency and can sign with a new team — or potentially ink a new deal with the Mets — after 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.

One of New York’s most popular players, Diaz finished 6-3 with 28 saves and a 1.63 ERA in 62 relief appearances during the 2025 season. He earned his third All-Star selection.

Diaz is 28-36 with a 2.82 ERA and 253 saves in 520 games (no starts) with the Seattle Mariners (2016-18) and Mets (2019-22, 2024-25).

Following the Mets’ second-half collapse this season, Diaz was asked about his future with the team.

“I love this organization,” Diaz said. “They treat me really, really good, my family and everything. If I decide to opt out, I would love to come back.”

Diaz will likely draw interest from multiple teams, including the Chicago Cubs and the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
