(SRN NEWS)- ) Anglicans face a looming choice about whether their global church family can stay united. Conservative leaders are meeting in Nigeria this week where they are expected to debate a plan that could loosen or even end ties to the archbishop of Canterbury. Many within the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, or Gafcon, opposed liberal shifts that have taken place in Western churches, including the embrace of gay marriage and homosexual ordination. On Monday, leaders of the historic Anglican Communion announced their own restructuring plan that aims to keep cooperation alive despite deep disagreements.
( ) The Gallup organization has been asking Americans what is most important for a good life and the number one requirement for most people is adequate shelter. The poll finds that 97 percent of respondents believe you have to have shelter to enjoy a good life. Family comes next, followed by sleep, the absence of physical pain and having as much money as you want. Quite a bit down the list is faith. Just 60 percent of respondents say that being free to practice their religion is very or somewhat important to a good life. Gallup acknowledges that the concept of a good life can vary widely in different countries.
( ) The Texas Legislature passed a bill last year giving schools the option of setting aside a daily school prayer period. School boards were required to consider whether they wanted to allow prayer. Most of the state’s 1,200 school districts appear to have declined the offer. Bill sponsor Republican David Spiller says about 15 districts have opted in. The law lets students pray or read religious texts during non-instructional time. It requires parental consent forms and limits who can hear or attend. Some districts that did not opt in pointed to federal, state and school policies that already allow students to organize prayer periods.
( ) There’s a new push to overturn gay marriage. Focus on the Family, the American Family Association and several other Christian ministries are joining the Greater Than Campaign. It hopes to see the Supreme Court reverse its 2015 decision legalizing same-sex unions nationwide. The group Them Before Us, which is organizing the campaign, says “When marriage was redefined, parenthood was too. Once husbands and wives became optional, mothers and fathers became replaceable.” A number of states are also working on legislation to challenge gay marriage. Supporters hope to take a legal challenge back to the Supreme Court.
